In the Word: Change

Remember that first cell phone, the one the size of a shoebox?  The year was 1992.  I was a new teacher.  A parent asked me if I was on the Internet. “The Inter… what?” I didn’t know what he was talking about.  Things change.

Last week I thought I was up to date on what is happening with technology in education. Then I went to a conference on Tuesday. Things have changed in the last few months.

A couple of weeks ago, I was home alone all day on a Saturday. After lunch, I decided to try out the Xbox our kids got for Christmas. I couldn’t get it going. I had to text my son Seth for directions. Thankfully, he helped me out. Things had changed again.

If you are like me, these changes are awesome but they can also be humbling and even scary.

In our world, things change all the time. Much of it is very good. Some changes are not at all appealing; in fact, some of them are very negative. Just watch the news on any given night.

As adults sometimes we struggle with these changes. Our kids are having a harder time. It is an amazingly difficult time to grow up in America. Kids are bombarded with sexual images on regular television every night. Texting, Facebook, You Tube and unlimited access to strange content online has made it even worse.

These are tough times for kids and families. So much is changing.

Fortunately God never changes.

“I the LORD do not change.” Malachi 3:6

Awesome, humbling and scary words.

God’s promises are awesome, humbling and even scary for some. God promises us as creator of this world that there will come a day of judgment. For those who do not see God as valuable, who do not respond to His calling, His promised, unchanging judgment is very real and should be scary.

Thankfully, we do not have to worry, for we live each day in a state of Grace as His children. We know God sent his Son Jesus to be our Savior. Heaven is our eternal home (that’s awesome). He took our place on the cross at Calvary (that’s pretty humbling).

This is just one of the many reasons why I believe our school is a special place. Here kids are valued for who they are not just as learners, but also as disciples, followers of Jesus and children of God.

That’s another thing that will never change.

In His Service,

Jeff Boehlke
